With years of experience in digital inclusion, Mhor Collective has been delighted to be a key delivery partner during the 2016/2017 test and learn phase of the One Digital project.

Funded by the Big Lottery, the One Digital programme is focused on enhancing the basic digital skills of charities and individuals.  A consortium of organisations have been working closely to deliver a raft of interventions to support a wide range of people develop basic digital skills.

As the organisation responsible for delivering the Scottish element of the programme, the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO) engaged Mhor Collective to deliver training throughout Scotland to a broad range of organisations including Grampian Housing, North Ayrshire Citizens Advice Bureau, Trust Housing, Maryhill Housing Association and Digital Renfrewshire.

The  70+ participants included customer service managers,  frontline staff and volunteer staff who work daily with people who are especially at risk of social and digital exclusion. The main objectives of the training were to:

  • Increase understanding of digital inclusion and the link with social exclusion
  • Help organisations understand the positive impact of digital technology both for themselves and for those using their service
  • Increase and develop digital skills and confidence amongst staff
  • Create an action plan to embed digital inclusion as part of everyday business

 A training plan was developed which centred around digital champions training.  This included a mix of group discussion, interactive, hands-on digital work and peer support training, with follow-on support provided through an online learning platform supported by Digital Unite. As well as improving their technical skills, the training provided the opportunity for the learners to appreciate the fears that some of their own clients who are unfamiliar with digital technology can have, and to learn hints and tips for helping to overcome those fears.  It also helped staff understand the impact of digital exclusion on those who are already facing multiple social exclusions.

Training was delivered over three highly interactive sessions. During the final sessions, participants worked together to create organisational action plans for their own organisations to ensure a focussed way forward  in their own day-to-day work, as well as a clear commitment to furthering the digital inclusion agenda.

Following the training, sample actions included:

  • Introducing tablets at service points
  • Developing tenants as digital champions
  • Free wifi to be introduced for tenants in some facilities
  • New multi agency partnerships to take community digital inclusion forward
